Khanom Bueang Thai- Crispy Thai pancakes shaped like Mexican tacos !

Khanom Bueang Thai is an ancient Thai dessert known as crispy 'pancakes' in English. Tourists remember this dessert as Sweet Mexican Tacos ! This dish too is a popular form of street food in Thailand. These cute little bites may look simple but the preparation method has a number of steps.

Khanom Bueang generally has two types of toppings- salty and sweet ! The salty topping (orange colored) is made from cream and served with chopped shrimps( or any other preferred meat) mixed with pepper and coriander then stir-fried with added sugar, fish sauce or salt. But nowadays, shredded coconut is often used instead of shrimps...thank goodness ! The sweet topping (yellow colored) is made of egg yolks boiled in syrup, which is called Foi Thong. But before these sweet or salty toppings are added, the pancakes are filled with coconut cream which is the reason why it's having a fluffy texture. Then the pancake or taco is folded in half while removing with a flat spatula !

Not only are these bite-sized treats delicious to eat, but they also have a lovely pancake aroma which you can smell while walking by on the street. I'm sure it will make you stop by for a taste. If you have a sweet tooth , you should definitely put it to your food tour list ! These crispy pancakes costs about 20 - 30 Baht.
